Vijaya Ekadashi is celebrated on the Ekadashi date of Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month. This Ekadashi is considered to be the best among all Ekadashis. This fast destroys sins and helps in attaining salvation.

Vijaya Ekadashi fasting method:

• Before fasting:
  • Take bath on Dashami Tithi and wear clean clothes.
  • Do not eat food at night.
• Ekadashi date:
  • Wake up in Brahma Muhurta and take bath.
  • Wear clean clothes.
  • Clean the house.
  • Worship Lord Vishnu.
  • Take a pledge to fast.
  • Do bhajan-kirtan throughout the day.
  • Consume fruits, milk, curd etc.
  • Stay awake at night.
• Dwadashi date:
  • Take bath after sunrise.
  • Provide food to Brahmins.
  • Do charity.
  • Break the fast.

• By observing this fast one gets the blessings of Lord Vishnu.

Dharmaraja Yudhishthir said – O Janardan! What is the name of Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month and what is its method? Please tell me.

Shri Bhagwan said, O king – the name of Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month is Vijaya Ekadashi. Due to the effect of this fast, a person achieves victory. This is the best fast among all the fasts. By listening and reading the greatness of this Vijaya Ekadashi, all sins are destroyed. Once upon a time Devarshi Naradji said to the world father Brahmaji, Maharaj! You tell me the Ekadashi Vidhan of Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month.

Brahmaji started saying, O Narad! The fast of Vijaya Ekadashi destroys old and new sins. Till date I have not told the method of this Vijaya Ekadashi to anyone. It bestows victory on all human beings. In Treta Yuga, when Maryada Purushottam Shri Ramchandraji went into exile for fourteen years, he started living in Panchavati along with Shri Lakshman and Sitaji. When the evil Ravana abducted Sitaji there, Shri Ramchandraji and Lakshmana became extremely distressed by this news and went in search of Sitaji.

While roaming around, when he reached the dying Jatayu, Jatayu narrated him the story of Sitaji and went to heaven. After going a little further, he became friends with Sugriva and killed Bali. Hanumanji went to Lanka and found Sitaji and described to her the friendship of Shri Ramchandraji and Sugriva. Returning from there, Hanumanji came to Lord Ram and told him all the news.

Shri Ramchandraji along with the monkey army left Sugriva’s property for Lanka. When Shri Ramchandraji reached the shore from the sea, he saw the bottomless sea full of crocodiles etc. and asked Lakshmanji that how will we cross this sea.

Shri Lakshman said, O Puran Purushottam, you are the original man, you know everything. A sage named Vakdalabhya lives in Kumari Island, half a yojana away from here. He has seen many Brahmas, you go to him and ask him the solution. Hearing such words of Lakshmanji, Shri Ramchandraji went to Vakdalabhya Rishi and sat down after listening to him.

The sage also considered him to be the Puran Purushottam in human form and asked him, O Ram! How did you come? Ramchandraji started saying, O Rishi! I have come here with my army and am going to Lanka to conquer the demons. Please tell me some way to cross the sea. This is why I have come to you.

Vakdalabhya sage said, O Ram! By observing a good fast on Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month, you will definitely win, and you will also definitely cross the ocean.

The method of this fast is to make a pot of gold, silver, copper or clay on the day of Dashami. Fill that pitcher with water and place five Pallavas and install it on the altar. Place satanja below that pitcher and barley on top. Install the golden idol of Lord Shri Narayan on it. On the day of Ekadashi, after taking bath, worship God with incense, lamp, naivedya, coconut etc.

After that, spend the day sitting in front of the pitcher and stay awake at night by sitting in the same manner. On the day of Dwadashi, after retiring from daily routine, give that pitcher to a Brahmin. Hey Ram! If you also observe this fast along with the generals, you will definitely be victorious. Shri Ramchandraji observed this fast as per the advice of the sage and with its effect he gained victory over the demons.

So oh king! Whoever observes this fast will definitely be victorious in both the worlds. Shri Brahmaji had told Naradji that O son! Whoever reads or listens to the greatness of this fast gets the fruits of Vajpayee Yagya.
