Who is Maa Chandraghanta?

Mother Chandraghanta is a form of Goddess Durga. According to the scriptures, a moon-like aura emanates from the crescent-shaped crown of his head, hence he is known by the name ‘Chandraghanta’. The word ‘Ghanta’ means ‘bell’, which is also a symbol of war cry. Thus, this form of Mata, along with providing fearlessness to the devotees, also represents the destruction of evil powers.

  • Makeup of Goddess Parvati: According to mythology, when the goddess did strange makeup for the marriage of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva, Lord Shiva was astonished to see her image. At the same time, the devotees of Lord Shiva who had come in the wedding procession were astonished and frightened after seeing this strange form of Parvati.
  • Request of Parvati’s family: Mother Parvati’s parents and other relatives found this form of Goddess Parvati frightening and they requested Lord Shiva to ask the Goddess to assume a gentle and beautiful form.
  • Manifestation of Chandraghanta: On the request of Lord Shiva and Parvati’s family, Goddess Parvati assumed her gentle and attractive form. This new form of his had a golden glow, and he had a crescent-shaped crown on his forehead, due to which his form came to be known by the name ‘Chandraghanta’. In this form he held ten hands which were adorned with various weapons.

Mother Chandraghanta is as bright as gold and has ten arms. In her hands she holds a sword, trident, mace, lotus flower, bow and arrow, kamandal, rosary and conch. One hand is in Abhaya Mudra and the other hand is in Varada Mudra. Her vehicle is a lion and she is always ready for war. A crescent moon is adorned on his forehead which emanates a golden glow. From his throat comes the sound of the bell which in its terrible tone becomes a roar for all the enemies of the devotees and produces a terrible echo.

The following materials are required for the worship of Maa Chandraghanta:

1. Idol or picture: The idol or picture of Maa Chandraghanta is essential for worship.

2. Flowers: White or yellow flowers, such as jasmine, rose, or lotus, are offered to the goddess.

3. Incense and lamp: The Goddess is pleased by lighting incense and lamp.

4. Roli, Akshat, and Sindoor: Roli, Akshat, and Sindoor are offered to the Goddess.

5. Fruits: Various types of fruits are offered to the Goddess as offerings.

Preparation for puja:

  • Time of worship:  Maa Chandraghanta is worshiped on the third day of Navratri. Take bath in the morning, wear clean clothes and prepare for puja.
  • Puja Materials:  Gather the required materials for the puja, such as idol or picture of Maa Chandraghanta, flowers, lamp, incense, roli, akshat, vermillion, fruits, naivedya, paan, betel nut, dakshina, clothes, jewellery, chanting rosary, etc. .
  • Place of worship:  Choose a clean and quiet place for worship. Install the idol or picture of Maa Chandraghanta in the east direction.

Method of worship:

  1. Achamana:  Start the puja by offering water to the goddess.
  2. Bath:  Bathe the Goddess with milk, curd, ghee, honey and water.
  3. Clothes:  Dress the goddess in beautiful clothes.
  4. Jewellery:  Dress the Goddess in jewellery.
  5. Fragrance:  Offer fragrance to the Goddess.
  6. Flowers:  Offer flowers to the Goddess.
  7. Lamp:  Light a lamp in front of the Goddess.
  8. Incense:  Offer incense to the Goddess.
  9. Naivedya:  Offer food to the Goddess.
  10. Tambul:  Offer Tambul to the Goddess.
